Electric Vehicle Rebates Fuel Green Car Sales in California

Electric vehicle use in the largest state in the Union is up, and we do mean way up, according to new data from the California Center for Sustainable Energy, an independent non-profit out of San Diego, Calif. This looks to be getting helped along by the state’s green car rebate program which, besides the federal up to $7,500 tax credit for alternative fuel vehicles, is one of the most generous of those available at the moment.

The CCSE reported there’s been a steady increase in applications for the California rebate program as the year draws to a close, with nearly 2,000 in October alone to make it the highest month total in the offering’s three year history. Overall, to date, California’s nation leading program has issued over 14,000 rebates to qualified drivers totaling over $33.5 million.

Of the types of vehicles which qualify for the rebate, the vast majority are either zero emissions vehicles, such as electric cars and fuel cell vehicles, or plug-in hybrids. These two different types of green cars have paid out over $22.5 and $9.8 million in rebates, respectively, accounting for over 95 percent of the program’s funding.
