The US Interior Department (DOI) is seeking expressions of interest from the private sector for potential commercial wind energy development leases in federal waters in three Atlantic Ocean areas off the coast of North Carolina.
The proposed areas were identified by DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and North Carolina’s renewable energy task force. The two sides believe the areas’ configurations offer developers strong commercial opportunities, while protecting sensitive habitats and resources. Efforts were also made to minimize space use conflicts with activities such as military operations, shipping and fishing.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimates that North Carolina has more offshore wind energy resource in less than 60-meters water depth than any state along the US east coast.
