Canadian Government Targeting Opponents of New Oil Sands Pipeline

Environmental groups in Canada say they are now operating within a culture of fear aimed at silencing legitimate democratic dissent.

As U.S. environmental groups renew their battle against the resurrected Keystone XL oil pipeline, their counterparts in Canada are facing a deeper problem—a government campaign to limit their influence over Canada's Northern Gateway pipeline.

The proposed Northern Gateway would funnel tar sands crude oil from Alberta to the Pacific Coast, where Canada could ship the oil via tankers to China and other countries. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed his support for the $6.6 billion project in January, before the first public hearing was held, and he reiterated his position during a recent visit to China.

Alberta's tar sands contain the world's third largest reserve of oil, but the province is landlocked. The booming oil industry there wants to build new pipelines to carry its crude to ports along the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific coast to gain access to global markets.

The Northern Gateway would consist of two 731-mile pipelines. One would funnel up to 525,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta to the city of Kitimat on the British Columbia coast. The other would flow from Kitimat to Alberta, carrying a liquid used to dilute the heavy crude so it can flow in pipelines.

The pipelines are controversial because they would cross vast forests and the two largest salmon-producing streams in Canada. British Columbia is also home to 200 First Nations communities, the aboriginal peoples indigenous to Canada, most of whom oppose the project.

Art Sterritt, executive director of Coastal First Nations, an alliance of 10 communities along the Pacific Coast, said his group will challenge the proposed pipeline in court if necessary.

"We have a good culture in British Columbia," he said. "There's a renewable forest industry and a renewable fishing industry ... What we're now seeing is a non-renewable industry from another province trying to overwhelm us."

As environmental groups have stepped up their campaigns against the project, key figures in the Harper administration have publicly denounced them as extremists, and a federal finance committee has announced plans to audit all of Canada's charities. In an internal government memo obtained by Greenpeace Canada, industry associations were listed as "allies" and environmental NGOs and aboriginal groups as "adversaries."

Northern Gateway's supporters have focused much of their attention on where charities get their money. Canadian charities are exempt from most taxes and can issue tax deduction receipts to their donors, similar to 501(c)(3) organizations in the United States.

the growing population

the growing demand for more oil is caused by the growing human population around the World. Reduce those numbers peacefully with family planning education and then there will be plenty of oil and gas for a smaller and wiser population.

Pipelines

Mr Harper you were possibly elected as a leader of a democratic country... you seem to be acting like you are leading a dictatorship.

Get with the programs Canadians, that don't benifit from oil want NO pipelines.

You were to protect our country yet you are helping to destroy our land & oceans.

I hope you are found guity of fixing the elections so we can get rid of you.

We're not all evil

As a Canadian, I would like to point out that the majority of Canadians, despite a massive government and big oil propaganda campaign, are opposed to the tar sands expansion,KeystoneXL and the Northern Gateway pipeline.

Claims by our now illigitimate governemnt (due to election fraud) to the contrary are false and are based on cleverly worded surveys, designed to get a pre-determined result.

A clear majority of Canadians oppose this illigitiamte government and all of it's anti-environmental policies.

Stephen Harper is a facist pig who will soon be convicted of election fraud.

the Canadian government

In Canada the press seems to be in cahoots with the government about Climate change. Case in point. Since the beginning of the Heartland Institute scandal on Valentines Day there has been little or no coverage of the scandal. Nothing. Or if there has it has been slim. The only article that comes to mind is the OP ED piece in the National Post condemning the scientist for leaking the documents. Nothing else. Then when it was revealed that Carlton University had a person with links to the Heartland Institute and the oil lobby teaching a course that was at odds with the rest of the science on climate change not a word in any paper. Including the Ottawa Citizen, the “smart” paper in Ottawa.   Up until the last few weeks I felt that the rantings of Margaret Wendt (Globe and Mail), Rex Murphy (CBC) and the entire staff of the National Post were just loons making money spewing drivel to the willfully ignorant. Now I am starting to think that the vast proportion of the Canadian media is just an extension of the Prime Ministers Office. Email your friends in Canada. They are not getting the full story.

Opponents of New Oil Sands Pipeline

I am fed up with the efforts of this government to drown out and ignore those voices of individual everyday Canadians who are opposed to the Northern Gateway pipelines project, with no affiliation whatsoever to any 'environmental' groups, by constantly harping on this issue. Those individual voices are rarely, if ever, mentioned in the mainstream media as opponents with a right to voice their opinion. As a taxpayer, I also resent my tax dollars being spent when various government departments bend over backwards to 'help' the proponent make sure their proposal gets by through the review process such as we just saw from Transport Canada. The review process is not designed to speak for the public interest but rather the interest of the proponent. Both government and especially Enbridge have budgets to pay for legal and marketing advice ... everyday Canadians do not, so ... so what if they choose to avail themselves of the assistance of environmental organizations to help them make their opposition known!

The Canadian government

The Canadian government raised no objection to Enbridge threatening American property owners with eminent domain. That's a foreign corporation operating in the US and threatening to take property away from Americans so that they can ship oil out of the Gulf of Mexico rather than send it to Oklahoma where the original Keystone Pipeline goes. Now they're all about national sovereignty when it comes to not-for-profit organizations working on global environmental issues? Harper is on the take. Here's hoping he's held responsible for the vote supression robocall scandal and tossed out of office because he's threatening every economic interest in North America whether it be Nebraska cattle ranchers or Vancover fisheries for the narrow benefit of his corporate sponsors.

Borders

The grossly arrogant government of Canada seems clueless or ignoring the FACT that a spill from a supertanker is likely to end up on US shores as well.

And people are wondering why the Harper government wants more warrant-free access to the internet providers' records. Duct tape anyone?
