Are coal plants in America rising or retiring?
Jeremy Fisher, a scientist with Synapse Energy Economics, claims that recent annoucements to retire up to 17,000 megawatts reflect a "rational economic" calculation on the part of coal owners — and it's more than a trend.
The factors are many: recession effects, rising coal prices, an aging fleet, increasing demand for natural gas and renewables, and new EPA rules to control climate pollution.
