One of the world's most ambitious emission reduction targets could be dropped, after Japan's recently elected Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a government panel he wanted to water down the country's commitment to cutting emissions 25 per cent by 2020.

According to reports in the Japan Times, Abe confirmed that following his landslide victory late last year he would revise the previous government's energy policy, which had been widely praised by green groups due to its commitment to renewable energy and ambitious emission reduction goals.
