Before European colonization of North America there were as many as 2 million gray wolves across North America, but populations have drastically declined. Wolves have been dispersing from Yellowstone National Park since their reintroduction there in the 1990s and biologists estimate that there are now around 7,000 wolves in the lower 48 states.
