Director of Online Fundraising and Outreach

InsideClimate News is seeking a Director of Online Fundraising and Outreach to augment and implement ICN's online fundraising program. InsideClimate News has built the foundations of a solid online giving program over the last three years working with News Revenue Hub, and now is ready to leverage this success to support the expansion of our climate journalism.

The director will report directly to the Publisher and work to grow website traffic, newsletter subscribers and social media followers, and convert them into donors. The director will also steward our current pool of online donors, sustain and build our monthly giving program, and identify and cultivate major donors.

The director will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the online giving program, as well as strategy.


  • Work with News Revenue Hub to develop and execute online fundraising campaigns, including renewals, monthly giving, year-end giving and special appeals.

  • Grow and segment lists, cultivating donors and prospects for fundraising success.

  • Write and edit copy for email communications, online advertising, social media, website content and other marketing/fundraising materials aimed at increasing donations.

  • Collaborate with ICN's graphic designer and web developer to optimize landing and donation pages and implement testing plans to improve performance and increase income.

  • Track performance and generate reports on online giving program.

  • Sustain and grow online giving and monthly giving programs with particular focus on converting newsletter subscribers

  • Oversee maintenance of subscriber data and mailing list integrity.

  • Other projects, as assigned.


  • Substantial experience with online marketing, direct mail and cross-channel marketing in public media or political campaign settings highly desirable.

  • Solid understanding of internet tools, processes and techniques for fundraising, donor development, list building and social networking.

  • Proven ability to write for an online audience at a professional level.

  • Knowledge of best practices for website optimization, search engine marketing and social media advertising.

  • Experience with databases, audience segmentation, data integration. Experience with Salesforce and Mailchimp a plus .

  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and the ability to meet deadlines.

  • A high-level of expertise combined with strong interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude.

  • Willingness and ability to formulate a plan and implement it down to smallest details
