Warmer winters are hurting the Texas peach crop, but while farmers like Diane Eckhardt worry about the future, long-time Texas Congressman Lamar Smith has worked to block efforts to rein in climate change and even to study it.
“When we’re looking at an orchard, we’re looking 30 years into the future,” Eckhardt says. “So, we have to take the information that we have now, and we can’t ignore it. If we ignore it, we won’t have a successful farm.”
