The destruction of the world’s forests is accelerating climate change by spewing carbon that trees sop up as they grow back into the atmosphere. Climate change impacts such as rising temperatures and drought can also exacerbate forest loss. Despite efforts to curb deforestation and forest degradation, global forest loss still outpaces forest growth and contributes to 10 percent of global carbon emissions. Here’s an overview of why saving our forests is a critical climate solution.
