With the American Clean Energy and Security (ACES) bill headed the House floor in as little as two weeks, the battle for votes between environmental groups and the fossil fuels industry is on.
On the fossil fuels side in the past week, Chevron CEO David O’Reilly argued that the bill’s already weakened greenhouse gas reduction targets simply can’t be met, and the utility industry’s Edison Electric Institute urged lawmakers to extend the industry’s already generous free emissions permits under the cap-and-trade proposal through 2040, rather than 2030.
At the same time, environmental groups started to push back with their own letters and volunteer campaigns calling for Congress to strengthen the climate bill.
Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection and its Repower America campaign jumped in today with a new national TV ad that speaks to the potential for renewable energy to repower America.
“We’re still borrowing money to buy oil from dictators who don’t like us and burning it in ways that kill God’s green earth,” a farmer tells viewers. “Why can’t we use our own clean energy and create good paying jobs here instead of sending billions overseas?”
"We can either go down the same old dead end path or finally do right by our kids. So what are we waiting for?"
The Alliance for Climate Protection is the same group that sat Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich together on a couch last year to call for the nation to address climate change.
